Supply and Demand
Whether or not to feed a Kay Dee Protein supplement is based on supply and demand. Cows demand high levels of protein – if rations do not supply the demand – you need to provide supplemental protein.
Yellow shaded areas are when protein supply falls short of the cows demand. Therefore, protein supplements should be utilized during these periods. (Dependent on the cows body condition score and extra supplementation). Most rations are also deficient in phosphorus, trace minerals and vitamins. Data clearly shows that a Kay Dee protein supplement is needed to balance most pasture grasses and hay.
Fresh forage variability can be quite extreme, relying heavily on weather and soil conditions. The figure above illustrates the comparison of protein supplied by common bermudagrass over the course of a year as compared to the protein requirements of a spring-calving, medium framed, 1000 lb. cross-bred cow (medium frame) and the protein requirements of a spring calving, large framed, 1200 lb. crossbred cow (large frame) (as referenced from http://cattletoday.com/archive/2008/June/CT1602.shtml). As illustrated by this figure, larger framed animals require approximately10 percent more protein for maintenance. To accurately estimate nutrient requirements of an animal, one must take into account breed, frame size, and stage of production. The figure above illustrates this, since a period of time exists when the forage base will meet the protein requirements of the smaller cow (from mid April through the first of July). The protein demand for the larger cow is a bit shorter (May through mid June). These are the opportune times to supplement Kay Dee protein products to ensure peak animal performance.

When fed at the recommended rate, Kay Dee Protein Blocks will supply enough protein, energy, phosphorus, trace minerals and vitamins to balance nutrient-deficient rations.
